A big family in a small town

We at Mackinaw United Methodist Church come from different parts of the country, different backgrounds, and our members are of all different ages.  Yet there is no question when you first walk through the door what you will find - a family.  A family of believers bound together by faith, held together in love.  A visitor is immediately welcomed by all and made to feel right at home.  The warmth and security we feel together is the one thing above all else that makes this a truly special place to worship and be part of the body of Christ!

Church Facts and History

James Matthews and his wife purchased Lot 80A, northeast of seven year old Mackinaw on April 12, 1834.  A short time after, they began holding devotional meetings in their home, as there were no religious services in town at the time.

In 1835, Asa Smith, R.A. Dunham, Thomas Matthews, John Reynolds and John Grundy organized the Methodist Episcopal Church, the first organized church in the area.  Services were held in the first schoolhouse at 303 E. Fast Street, with Mr. Mitchell preaching the first sermon.

When the schoolhouse could no longer accommodate the growing congregation, James Matthews circulated a subscription to build the first edifice.  Mr. George Miller donated the lots for the purpose.  The church has been on these same lots ever since.  This work began December 16, 1850, and was ready for occupancy October 15, 1851.  James Matthews, Calvin Bagford, George Miller and Asa S. Smith were among the diligent workers.  Rev. William Brady preached the first sermon in the church.  In 1855, Thomas Matthews organized the first Sunday School.
